Chicken, Alaska






Chicken, population 17, was named because the locals were so grateful for the abundance of ptarmigan in the area but could not agree on the spelling so they named the town Chicken. One of the few active gold mining towns remaining from the gold rush. Great book "Tisha" written about, and co-authored by, Anne Hobbes who was a teacher in Chicken in the late 20's. Downtown Chicken, the saloon fires off a cannon at 6pm signalling its open for business. Thought this was a great shot of a rainbow with the Pedro gold dredge below. There is actually gold at the end of this rainbow. Top of the world highway, from the forty mile to Dawson
